Sneakin' Veggies

Call me cliché, but I've turned into that nagging Mom who says "eat your veggies." When it comes to vegetables, Harper has zero interest. If it's orange or green and doesn't pass her finger poke test, it ends up on the floor without her even taking a bite. After doing a little research online, I came across a couple cookbooks that might just help me sneak a few veggie servings into Harper's food.

I made my way to Barnes & Noble this week and picked up The Sneaky Chef and Deceptively Delicious. So far I've only browsed through each book, and made a couple of the make-ahead recipes in The Sneaky Chef. I'm looking forward to trying a few recipes this week, we'll see if Harper catches on to my concealed veggies.

This week also marked Harper's 13 month "birthday." Now that we can say, "she's 1" I feel a little silly continuing to take monthly photos. But feeling a little silly won't stop my excessive camera snapshots, sorry. Harper is full of personality and is quickly picking up new things. Her newest discovery? Her tongue. She had a few days where she was totally fascinated by it. Now when you ask her, "Harper, where's your tongue?" she sticks it out and pokes it with her finger. She also pokes at her belly and her toes when you start quizzing. Her sound library continues to grow. She still makes her "mmmmaaoooo" sound which I accept when asked "what sound does the cow make?" When I picked her up a couple weeks ago from Granny Deb's, she showed me another new sound. When Deb asked, "Harper, what sound does the kitty cat make?" she made the cutest high pitched "meowww" sound. It practically melts our hearts. My last Harper update for the week is the funniest new face of hers... we call it the "cheese face." She wrinkles her entire face, and shows all her pearly whites. It's hilarious, and she does it A LOT!

Harper also had her very first dentist appointment this week. Mitch's parents are great friends with their dentist, and it happens to be just down the street from their house. Deb took Harper to visit John and Patty at the office and get a feel for the dentist. She sat in the chair, played with some toys and left with an awesome Dora toothbrush. She won't have to go back until she's 3 for her first appointment, so until then we'll brush, brush, brush.

I finally had a chance to use my beautiful new mixer last week. I made this amazing carrot cake (recipe here!) from SkinnyTaste.com. I'm so in love with this piece of equipment. I received the stamp of approval from Mitch and Harper too, which was also satisfying. With all these new cookbooks, and my monthly cooking magazines it's going to get plenty of play in our kitchen.

Our weekend was pretty low key, which is always welcomed. To celebrate Hockey Day Minnesota yesterday, we had a few people over to honor the special occasion. Pizza, drinks, hockey and amazing company... practically the perfect Saturday night. We watched a couple great games, and finished the night with a game of Cards Against Humanity. It was such a fun night "in" with everyone.

Mitch doesn't work tomorrow, so he and Harper are having Daddy/Daughter day. I'm trying to talk them in to driving down to Eden Prairie to take me out to lunch. We'll see if I can be convincing enough!

Until next time...
The Helleen's
