Quarantine, Week 5 | Questions From Kids
Parenting is hard. Throw in a global pandemic and an enforced stay-at-home order, and it's proven to be even more challenging in our household.
As the weeks continue and we remain isolated in our home, I see their little brains spinning more and more. The first few weeks, they've kept their questions quiet, but this week they started to escape.
Why do I have to be 6ft away from people?
Can't we just go see our family?
Why do you have to work, can't you just play with me?
Why is that lady wearing a mask on her walk?
Do I need a mask? How about gloves?
Are people dying from this virus?
Are kids getting this virus?
Are we going to get the virus?
What happens if you do get the virus?
How long does the virus last?
How long do we have to stay at home?
Are we going to see our teacher, friends, and classrooms again soon?
Do we always have to talk to our teachers on the computer now?
Will there be dance competitions this year?
Do I get to start Kindergarten and 3rd grade next year?
Why do we have to stay at home?
Can't we just go to Target?
These wide-eyed, innocent kiddos are asking hard-hitting questions. Questions I'd rather not discuss with my 5-year old and 8-year old, but as I continue to say, "these times are weird." We're doing our best to answer their questions honestly with a positive attitude and still hope to make them feel safe and comfortable too.
But some of these questions, we don't have the answer. Not having answers is hard for them to understand, and it is for us too. The continued uncertainty surrounding this pandemic is worrying for us all.
So we give them answers when we can and a giant squeeze too. Because right now, I'm so thankful we're all together. Healthy, safe, having fun, and occasionally driving each other crazy - just like families should.
What kind of questions are your kiddos asking, and how are you responding?
We hope everyone is doing well, and we're sending BIG virtual hugs!
